MT4 indicator efficiency

The Hurst Cycles indicators are quite demanding on CPU, so it can be a good idea to make some effort to increase and maintain efficiency.

First of all it is important to have the correct number of bars in a chart. To do this go to Tools -> Options -> Charts and find these options:

  • Maximum bar in history: this defines the maximum number of bars which will be downloaded as historical data. This should be set to 20,000.
  • Maximum bars in chart. this defines the maximum number of bars which will be displayed on the chart. This should be set to 5,000.

In both cases, if the total number of available bars is less than the number inserted then the full number of bars will be downloaded.

To ensure the best analysis possible while also maintaining efficiency, follow these steps:

  1. Before initialising (so before you apply the Hurst Cycles indicator to the chart) go to Tools -> Options -> Charts Maximum bars in chart and set this to the maximum.
  2. Go through the full process of initialisation, by following the instructions in this video.
  3. The phasing analysis will now have been saved in a text file inside the MetaTrader 4 installation folder. From now on the analysis will benefit from the long data range, but doesn't need to have the actual data to refer to. All the necessary information is contained in the text file.
  4. Now go back to Tools -> Options -> Charts Maximum bars in chart and set this to 5,000. The chart will now work at full efficiency and have the best analysis possible.

Saadia Gauher over on YouTube has made this video on maximising efficiency on MetaTrader4. Bryan McAfee has some similar advice which you can find here.
